Relevance
In bound links to your website should be coming from relevant websites and directory categories. If you own a flower shop then you don’t want incoming links from a directory category labeled “real estate”. These links from irrelevant categories won’t help your Google rankings very much.
Tags
The text within the tag of your incoming links is probably the most important element of building successful and effective inbound links. The tag is simply the clickable part of an in bound link. The tag text of the above directory submission is “Florida SEO”. The tag text is what Google uses to determine what keywords to rank your website for. In this case I chose Florida SEO because it get about a 1000 unique searches every month and I saw that it had a medium amount of competition. Currently, Beachstar Inc ranks number 4 in the organic search results for this phrase. In the next 3 months, with continued directory submissions, I expect to take the number spot.
Vary Your Text Tags
It is important that you don’t submit your website to directories using only one or two keyword phrases. Google will view this as cheating and will actually lower ranking for that keyword. For this reason it is best to use 8 to 10 different keyword phrases and descriptions when submitting to directories. You can determine which keyword phrases are most popular for your niche by visiting the tools section of Google Adwords and doing a keyword search. You can also use Niche Watch, which is a free tool that ranks your website against the competition for your chosen keywords.

It is always best to do your directory submissions manually. Most good, high quality, directories have captchas that require you to enter a series of letters and numbers to determine that you are a human and not a spam bot. Automatic directory submissions sound great on paper but in the real world they are not very effective.
